A Brief History

Leyden Car Centre was founded way back in 1982 by Bill Robinson. Bill had a thriving business at Cuttys Lane Garage in Stevenage and outgrew it due to the increasing number of customers that were bringing their cars to him, mostly through word of mouth recommendations. He had built up a great reputation for being able to fix problems with cars where others had tried and failed, and had to move to larger premises in order to satisfy the demand for a reliable, honest independant garage in the area.

Leyden Car Centre has now been in business for over 30 years, and continues to be a popular choice among motorists with cars both old and new. The principles of good old fashioned honesty and commitment to providing exceptional service have been instilled by Bill, and continue to be practised by all of the staff.

The Team

Bill Robinson

Bill Robinson trained as a motor mechanic with a large dealership in Newcastle, and carried on with the trade when he joined REME (the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in the Army). After the army he worked for several more dealerships (including Ford, Vauxhall and British Leyland) before starting out on his own. He owned several garages and finally moved to Leyden Car Centre in 1982. Bill has done it all, from servicing to repairs, from paintwork to complete engine rebuilds and gearbox overhauls. There is not a car built on this earth that Bill can't repair!

Garry Robinson

Garry Robinson is the eldest son and has been in the trade for over 30 years. He got hooked by the car bug when he was just a child, helping his dad work on the NSU Ro80's he used to collect and restore. When he was just 8 years old Garry could be seen in the workshop of Cuttys Lane garage learning the trade at an early age. Garry attends numerous engine diagnostic training courses each year to keep on top of developments with the latest makes and models.

Andy Robinson

Andy Robinson, also in the trade for over 30 years, became Bill's apprentice at the age of 17. He demonstrated a great natural ability to the trade and working so closely with Bill has picked up a wealth of knowledge. He passed his apprenticeship with flying colours and has been working with Bill ever since, developing into a fantastic all round mechanic with great troubleshooting and problem solving skills.

Paula Phipps

Paula Phipps has also worked with Bill for many years. As the Office Manager she ensures the administritive side of the business runs smoothly. Having worked in the business for so long Paula can often diagnose issues on the phone, and could probably have a good go at changing a set of spark plugs if required! She is also a professional breeder of Minature Schnauzer puppies.
